Nervous Tissue Organization of Nervous System ● Central Nervous System (CNS) ○ Brain ○ Spinal Cord ● Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) ○ Cranial Nerves ○ Spinal Nerves ● Motor System ○ Somatic Motor System ■ Affects skeletal muscle ■ Voluntary actions ○ Autonomic Motor System ■ Effects cardiac and smooth muscle, glands ■ Involuntary actions Cells of the Nervous System ● Neurons ○ Capable of conducting impulses ○ Contains: Cell Body (Soma), Dendrites, Axon Hillock, Axon,  Synaptic Terminals ○ Bipolar Neurons ■ Sensory neurons that are specialized for taste, vision, hearing, balance and smell ■ Single Axon + Single Dendrite ○ Psuedo­Unipolar Neurons ■ Carry sensation from skin ■ Pseudo b/c they act just like bipolar neurons ○ Multipolar Neurons ■ Also function  as interneurons ■ In the PNS and  CNS ● Interneurons ○ Subtype of neuron ● Glial Cells ○ Support cells Classification of Neurons ● Afferent Neurons ○ Sensory neurons­ receptors for pain, pressure, touch ○ Cell bodies are in posterior root ganglion ○ Central process carries info to CNS ● Efferent Neurons ○ Motor neurons ○ Cell bodies are in the CNS ○ Axons carry impulses to muscles and glands (effectors) ● Interneurons ○ Association neurons ○ Receive info from unipolar cells and relay it to motor neurons ○ Facilitate communication between sensory and motor neurons ● Glial Cells (aka Neuroglia) ○ Found in CNS and PNS ○ Smaller than neurons ○ Capable of cell division ○ Protect, nourish and provide support for neurons ○ Four Types in the CNS: ■ Astrocytes ● Form the Blood­Brain Barrier ● Regulate tissue fluid composition ● Fill space from dead neurons;  structural network ● Directly influence neuronal function  by calcium release ■ Ependymal Cells ● Line ventricles of the brain ● Help to form choroid plexus for  production of CSF *CSF = Cerebrospinal Fluid ■ Microglia ● Very small cells ● Go through CNS and clean up debris and waste through phagocytosis ■ Oligodendrocyte ● Extensions that wrap around axons to provide myelin insulation ● Myelinate multiple axon
