Sociology 204 Notes Week of Friday November 13th 2015 Tuesday November 10th Sociology of Race Ethnicity social differentiation of a group based in perceived physical characteristics race is a myth fabricated by the human mind no race is superior to the others no pure race eXists No science supports this claim as a construction race is a powerful force in our lives ethnicity people who identify with one another because of a common ancestry and cultural heritage race was invented in the age of colonization Consequences of Race race affects social chances in 1990 the Federal Reserve Board found that white loan applicants were uniformly less likely to be denied a loan than all other demographics the returns on every level of college education are higher for white people discrimination an action of unfair treatment directed against either an individual or a group individual discrimination negative treatment of one by another institutional discrimination the discrimination woven into society prejudice mental act of negatively judging another due to their perceived group example Hartley39s survey 1946 various samples were asked questions regarding what they would do if certain demographics moved into their neighborhood Fake demographics were used to test people39s natural inclination towrds prejudiced thought the Wallonians Pireneans Danireans racism when the basis for discrimination is race Common Features of Racist Societies stigmatization of minority groups and the normalization of the dominant group systematic discrimination 8 segregation genocide the systematic annihilation of a race or ethnic group dehumanizing or labeling the targeted group as less than fully human enables genocide population transfer causing a minority group to relocate due to racism internal colonialism how a country39s dominant group eXploits minority groups Levels of Explanation frustration 8 scapegoats prejudice is the result of frustration being projected onto scapegoats who become the targets of blame This in turn justifies the hostility towards the scapegoats emphasizing stigma and labeling authoritarian personality in numerous surveys people who score highly as prejudiced also score highly as insecure conformist submissive and deeply respectful of authority Thursday November 12th Psychopaths the prefrontal cortex is less active when regular people view pictures of homeless people than when they view pictures of business men college students etc this replicates a psychopathic mindset only a small percentage of our society is made up of psychopaths how does this psychopathic inclination in regular people eXplain the phenomenon of genocide one eXplanation propaganda propaganda enables the few powerful psychopathic members of a society to reach and manipulate a larger group Policy and Ideology why is it liberal to point out child poverty growing inequality or racism veterans in our society are disproportionately homeless with one in seven veterans fitting the homeless criteria AfricanAmericans and Latinos are also disproportionately prone to poverty and homelessness
