FHS 328 Lecture Notes Week 5 Implicit Bias and the Human Service Profession (implications for practice and policy) • The Mashup—how we make decisions o Common sense o Rational mind • Implicit Bias—why don’t we just get rid of it? And where does it ocome from? o “When you are asked what you are thinking about, you can normally answer. You believe you know what goes on in your mind, which often consists of one conscious thought leading in an orderly way to another. BUT, this is not the only way the mind works, nor is it the typical way. Most impressions and thoughts arise in your conscious experience without you knowing how they got there” o You think you know what’s going on inside your head? § Recent brain studies suggest that about 2% of our emotional cognition is available to us consciously o System 1: ? o System 2? • Cognitive Biases decision making o Confirmation Bias § Only listen to info that confirms preconceptions • Ex: not every person is going to understand why I LOVE my 49ers and that’s okay. They have a right to their opinion and I have ever right to ignore it • Ex: Bart Simpson is a bad kid—if I do something bad and there’s no one there to catch me, does that make me good? o Stereotype § Expectaions of person w/o knowing them o Bandwagon effect § Think/do because others do § Ex: the Asch Experiment • Go along with the group even if we don’t believe what we are saying § Group dynamics is one of the most powerful things in psychology o Recency § Most recent info is most relevant—the most important is the most recent thing we heard and we get rid of past info o Blind spot bias § Not recognizing our own biases/ easier to recognize others • Ex: o Anchoring bias § Over reliance on info heard first • Ex: like first impressions • Ex: impression of an inmate, makes you biased toward other inmates in regards to their experiences. • Mind Bugs—where do they come from? o How does this happen? § Well-‐intentioned people try to align their actions with their intentions, and often get thwarted by their implicit bias! § Implicit biases are pervasive and robust! Do not necessarily align with our declared beliefs! o Implicit Bias plays a large role in race • Expert Intuition—system 1 is really skilled o Most of us perform amazing feats of intuition thousands of times a day § Detect anger in first words of a phone call • System 2: Impulse Control—requires that we pay attention o Part of system 2s job is to monitor and control thoughts and actions suggested by system 1, allowing some to be expressed in behavior, suppressing or modifying others à but it doesn’t always do a good job o System 1—automatic intuition o Many people are overconfident, tend to place too much faith in their intuitions o Cognitive effort (system 2) is midly unpleasant for some and they avoid it as much as possible • Other implications of Implicit Bias—where can problems show up? o Health care o Housing o Schools o Hiring/employment/layoffs o Aw enforcement Immigrant Families • American Dream o we are largely a nation of immigrants o “Keep ancient lands, your storied pomp!” cries she with silent lips. “give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore. Send these, the homeless, tempest-‐tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!” o the attraction of the U.S. and the possibility of realizing the “American Dream” is so powerful that each year, hundreds of thousands of people immigrate to our country o there is great diversity within these immigrants. Some are highly skilled, some are not o some arrive without legal permission. These are the “undocumented immigrants” most obtain legal permission. o In 2011, 1 million people legally immigrated to the U.S. o In the U.S. 40 million immigrants, 11 million undocumented • The Country of Origin—There are about 40 million immigrants living in the U.S. o Europe (12%) o Asian (29%) o Africa (4%) o Latin America (53%)à central America (70% of the 53%) o Other (2%)—Canada • The Border o 2000 miles of borderà about 450 miles is “secure” (about 25% o 250 million people legally traverse the border each year o 1.1 million people caught by border patrol during peak years (2000-‐ 2008) o 6.6 billion cost of enforcement/deportation per year • Border Action Network—Humane Borders o Humanitarian work for immigrants is very controversial § Because it can “encourage” people to cross o Water is left out o Providing food and water o Repercussions for those who provide aidà against the law in some jurisdictions; there’s a lot of culture not to o Solar panelà if you need help, push the red buttonà rescue personnel will come o Ex: Samaritans, Derechos Humanos, • Undocumented Immigrants—characteristics and demographics o 1 million unauthorized immigrants under age 18 o 4.5 million U.S. born children with unauthorized parents o Most unauthorized immigrants have lived in U.S. for 10 years or more § Nearly half are parents of minor children o “dreamers”—children in school with undocumented parents o attitudes about what to do—42% U.S. adults think a dual approach should be used: tighter restrictions and a pathway to citizenship
