Arlie Hochschild and Patricia Hill Collins The sociology of emotions Macro sociologists are marginally interested in emotions since their focus is observable phenomenon Since S I study subjective meaning they are more likely to study emotions The subjective meaning that an individual assigns to a situation includes an emotional element The feelings that an individual has toward those they come into contact with affects the de nition of the situation which then affects the decision about whether to interact to withdraw or passively acquiesce Simmel wrote of jealousy and gratitude as two emotions that tie people together Randall Collins rituals can intensify emotional arousal and commit participants to certain views religious rituals patriotic rituals Script Ohio These rituals tend to strengthen and legitimize a social order Arlie Russell Hochschild emotional labor Taking emotions and feelings seriously went along with taking women s experiences and perceptions seriously Hochschild wrote that the sociology of emotions is an extension of symbolic interactionism Goffman studied embarrassment and shame Hochschild s work encompasses the entire range of emotions grief depression frustration anger contempt guilt envy jealousy embarrassment shame love compassion nostalgia joy pride Emotional labor is the management of feeling to create a publicly observable facial and bodily display Emotional labor is sold for a wage and has exchange value Jobs calling for emotional labor have three characteristics 1 the worker must have face to face or voice to voice contact with the public 2 the worker is required to produce an emotional state in another person 3 the employer is allowed to exercise a degree of control over the emotional activities of the employee Hochschild extended the concept of cognitive dissonance to include emotional dissonance People in jobs requiring emotional labor experience emotional dissonance They have to maintain a difference between feeling and pretending and it leads to strain called emotive dissonance They try to reduce the strain by changing what they feel or by changing what they pretend The second shift how two paycheck parents manage their emotions when they experience stress in their second shift at home Quantitative sociologists downplay Hochschild s work because it is not based on large samples On the other hand she pointed out that support for working families is inadequate in this country Nancy Chodorow male children see themselves as unlike the mothers with whom they have had their first emotional relationship and they learn to deny and repress female qualities in order to develop their male identities Therefore males grow up with an underdeveloped relational capacity and they see females as inferior Female children continuously identify with the mother accept their emotions and develop a high relational capacity Even though sociology of emotions would seem to be an acceptable topic for symbolicinteractionists it was ignored except by women sociologists They have expanded our awareness of how important emotions are to an understanding of social interaction Patricia Hill Collins Collins reconceptualizes social theory using the perspective of outsider groups she includes the experiences and definitions of subordinate groups In her work she attempts to portray the interconnection of race social class and gender using the experience of AfricanAmerican women Her perspective is that the discipline is dominated by the perspective of white male interests As a result Black women s experiences have been distorted or ignored Her work is not quantitative rather it is autobiographical and draws on f1ction Collins work is not based on any one theoretical tradition It does however draw on symbolicinteractionism in its discussion of meanings in interaction Collins work could be seen as a framework for including many forgotten groups in the subject matter of sociology
