The Napoleonic Era 17991815 Defining characteristics mixture of revolutionary and old regime elements liberal and conservative not a repudiation of the religious toleration centralization carried throughout Europe Napoleon s Early Career Napoleon Bonaparte heir of French Revolution Napoleon s military career was inconceivable without the Revolution because he was from Corsica and relatively unimportant in the huge demand for talented military officers in the wake of the Revolution talented Napoleon promoted quickly ruthless pragmatist example Egyptian Campaign of 1798 cumulating in The Battle of the Nile Napoleon decided to invade Egypt because he thought of himself as a world figure and because napoleon identified British control over India as major strength and saw Egypt as a stepping stone to India unsuccessful because the ottoman empire was supported by British and the French became cut off by sea by the British navy Napoleon couldn t get army back to France Napoleon decided to leave the army behind and sneak back to France alone and by saving himself he could continue his career Seizing Power postrevolutionary France s political system so corrupt that Napoleon seizes power becomes first consul told the people of France that the military was now in charge 5 years later Napoleon wants to make power legitimate Napoleon was a powerful government official but that title was not viewed on same level as hereditary rulers Napoleon didn t want to be king but wanted to be emperor because Louis of Bourbon was in exile in Britain and claimed to be the hereditary king of France Napoleon didn t want to chance him trying to get into power which he could if monarch established with empire rather than monarchy that would not be an issue as there would be no hereditary claim to the title of emperor Church and State Napoleon signed a concordat with the Catholic Church stated that the Catholic Church will have a privileged position in France Napoleon was a big supporter of religious toleration and would not declare France a catholic state people still felt that religion was encroaching on the state and the concordat upset revolutionaries Centralization napoleon likes standardization system everyone doing same thing at same time centralized education system higher education was turned into a university system run by the state created a complete system of law called the Code Napoleon before regime there was no uniform law Napoleon established committee of french lawyers to come up with one central code Napoleonic Europe Napoleon established satellite republics which he turns into kingdoms establishes hereditary monarchies across Europe through his family uses his male relatives as kings in the conquered satellite republics only one brother had true leadership potential but Napoleon did not trust him and therefore he did not become a king examples napoleon crushed and controlled Austria Prussia and Spain Policy on North America Napoleon thought North America was a major asset Napoleon could strike at Britain through Canada thought it would be nice to have french troops in Louisiana to threaten the united states if necessary ended up selling the french territory in the Louisiana purchase sold to the US to keep the territory out of the hands of British end of trying to gain power in North America for the french Napoleon s Enemies Napoleon had two problems Russia the czar of Russia was powerful and the only world leader Napoleon considered treating as an equal Britain Britain had a better navy than France Napoleon decided to cut Britain off from all european monarchies establishes continental system all the european countries on the european continent including Russia would refuse to buy and sell to the British idea was that the British won t be able to make money and would eventually will have to do as napoleon says hard to enforce without control of seas because Britain was a manufacturing powerhouse industrial revolution
