HIST 150 Notes Krzemienski 112315 The Great War WWI Greatbig not good 1917 Russian Revolution Changed Russia into a communist nation Became known as the Soviet Union This communism eventually turned into totalitarianism under Joseph Stalin Main thing that the leaders of the Soviet Union wanted to do was get out of war 1917 USA Not yet involved in the war but watching closely Philosophy condition of USA for a long time was ISOLATION the idea what that the bodies of water surrounding them kept them from being involved as much with overseas con ict USA was created as a way to get away from the war so people felt they had the right to stay away and not get involved Another opinion was that they should let the other countries ght it out for a while because the US will bene t in the long run when the other countries ran out of materials supplies and food they would look to the US for help Woodrow Wilson Not the best President seen as arrogant racist and stubborn ANGLOPHILE loved all things British meant that if they joined any con ict Wilson would always want to choose England s side Ethnic American population had a more clear cut idea of which side they wanted the US to take based on their ethnicity Events that sway American opinion 39gtUUI 39 Rape of Belgium Edith Cavell Woodrow Wilson Anglophile Zimmerman Note Telegram From German Foreign Of ce people who deal with international relations in Germany to the German Ambassador in Mexico Letter said that if the US joined the British then Germany wants Mexico to launch an attack on US to keep them busy in exchange Germany would give Arizona New Mexico and Texas to Mexico after they won Telegram was intercepted by US and it was published in every US news paper UBoat underwater boatsubmarine Germany started submarine warfare along British Isles HMS Lusitania German subs had orders to shoot on sight blew the ship up from underneath the sea with no warning everyone was killed including 200 Americans weapons were secretly in the hull of this cruise ship to be transported Germany began to practice UNRESTRICTED SUBMARINE WARFARE shot at every vessel they came in contact with including American ships last straw April 6 1917 USA declares war on Germany War changes when US enters Germany knows number of US troops is a gamechanger Germany s troops became mobile ran from enemies Their arrival by Summer of 1918 changed the war and ultimately helped England get victory US had an easier time in this war because they came in late did not have to deal with struggles that occurred at rst in this war November 11 1918 War is Over Versailles Conference Germany was created at the palace shortly before so it was a message to Germany Similar to Congress of Vienna except instead of random representatives from each country the actual leaders of the countries came together to decide what to do with Germany and what to do if this situation comes up in the future USA Rep Woodrow Wilson brought document of quot14 Pointsquot with him to conference expected them to accept all points and be grateful when they did not he started to go crazy Great Britain Rep David Lloyd George Wilson whispers to him that English speakers need to stick together he thought the people working in the building were all spies who stole his furniture calls Wilson out and says something along the lines of quotWho are they going to tell We are all herequot George wants to treat Germany fairly just like they had done with France otherwise something worse will come along France Rep Georges Clemenceau opposes George and wants to take everything away from Germany January 1919 Treaty of Versailles 1 2 3 4 League of Nations International peace keeping organizations Germany has to admit guilt for the War extreme because it means that they are responsible for every death Germany is stripped of possessions colonies Germany has to pay 56 Billion for reparations impossible for a nation who has just lost a war and all of their possessions The penalties are so harsh that they feel they need to ght them at all times
