Drug vs Food The FDA Food and Drug administration regulate what is and isn t a drug many dietary supplement s are sold as food products despite rumors a substance may help with mental health issues insomnia depression anxiety no where on the label will it claim it works on these Labeling is regulated so many herbal remedies are foods not drugs This is observable in nutrition info Being given Buying a natural medicinequot of 300 mg only indicates some of the plant is evident in the capsule but it does not mean it makes up all of it Over the Counter Drugs OTC Drugs can be OTC unless because of toxicity or another reason needs to be injected it may be safely sold and used only under a prescription With more drugs being determined eligible to be obtained without a prescription a pharmacist lobbying group suggests a new category pharmacist recommended drugsquot These can be obtained without a prescription but require the pharmacist to discuss safe use Already being used in England and Australia and studied in Canada Categories Stimulants caffeine only active ingredient allowed Weight loss Sedatives and Sleep Aids you cannot buy sedatives over the counter Anesthetics For the exam no over the counter anesthetics but really there are orajel reduce all types of sensation Analgesics without pain opiods not OTC and internal analgenics tynelol motrin advil Cold and allergy Allergy and Sinus medications OTC drug abuse usually in adolescent population Generally abuse DXM About 1 in 10 teens report using cough medicenes to get high Most of the kids abusing DXM were beween 15 and 16 years old Mental Illness as a disease 0 not necessarily a blood test or mri or any physical test to be diagnosed Symptoms lead to a diagnosis Once the diagnosis or disease is identified the cause can be better ascertained Once a cause is understood a cure can be suggested Criticism behavioral symptoms are not enough Criticized by both psychiatrists and psychologists Diagnostic and Statistic Manual of Mental Disorders DSMV Clusters of behavioral symptom indicators allowing for diagnosis Person must meet preestablished number of criteria prior to receiving that diagnosis Most criticisms are about diagnosing or patholigizing the client Where do you stand Mood Disorders Depression Bipolar disorder Anxiety Disorders Psychosis SchizophreniaShattered mind Substance related disorders Early treatment was in the form of drug induced prolonged sleep convulsions and coma s Antipsychotics Phenothiazines also called tranquilizers neuroleptics Cause reduction in psychotic symptoms Tardive Dyskinesia late onset abnormal movements Older Antipsychotic side effects indluded parkinsons like symptoms including muscle rigidity shuf ing walking Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitors MOAI Discovered with use it TB patients Toxicity and Side effects limit their use Increases suicide risk Only two are still in use They alter the normal metablosim of a dietary amino acid resulting in high blood pressure and possible stroke if food high in tyramine SSRIs Also antidepressants ECT Electroconvulsive Shock Therapy Considered the most effective treatment for severely depresses patients More rapid than antidepressants Studies find it to be at least as effective as antidepressants and some studies show it being more effective
