Generalization Consider the number of examples one example does not represent the population unless it is a representative sample and caution with the word quotalmostquot Relevance of examples how relevant are the premises to the conclusion Consider background rates when we are given statistical numbers make sure we know the background ex when we know 100 people say yes to black Friday shopping consider the background out of how many people answered yes and also whether or not it is a random sample chose people randomly Carefully consider the statistics the mean median average standard deviation etc Statistics need 3 critical questions What is the statistics saying How believable are the statistics Are the statistics being relevant in supporting the conclusion Counterexamples that against the generalization when writing an argument it is good to add counterexamples into your argument and then say how these counterexamples are not as important as your conclusion
