1 century AD Empire A. C. Octavius Augustus a. Established the Roman Empire, which would last around 500 years b. He was Rome’s first emperor. c. There will be no going back the republic is dead d. Battle of Actium gave him control of the entire Roman world e. Once he has acquired absolute power he has two main goals in life i. He does not want to give his absolute power up, he wants to keep control. ii. He wants to avoid the fate of Julius Caesar f. To accomplish this he does everything he can to make it appear as if the republic still exists. g. Never wore a crown or sat on a throne, he never lived in a big palace, instead he allowed freedom of speech. h. He claims that he is just a regular Senator. i. He wanted to make his rule as easy to accept as possible. j. Commander in chief of all of Rome’s armies k. He is successful in hiding the fact that he is an emperor. l. He creates a new government that finally restores peace to the Roman world. m. His reign begins the Pax Romana n. The Romans gave him a nickname, Augustus, which was a sign of respect o. He needs to find a successor to take over when he dies. p. This was a problem for him because he no sons, only one daughter, Julia B. Pax Romana a. Means the Roman Peace b. Lasts just over two hundred years. c. During this period most rulers ruled as Octavius ruled d. It was the Golden Age of Rome C. Marcellus a. Octavius’ nephew and his first choice to take over b. He suddenly dropped dead in his early twenties D. Agrippa a. Second in command to Octavius and married his daughter Julia b. He then drops dead but he was in his twenties E. Caius a. Became third choice as successor and suddenly drops dead in his twenties F. Lucius a. He is the fourth choice as successor and heir, unfortunately he dies in a mysterious boating accident. G. Postumus a. Fifth choice as heir b. Is accused of rape and vanished to a tiny island H. Tiberius a. Step-son with third wife Livia b. Augustus never really liked him and he wanted a blood relative to succeed him c. Becomes the sixth heir and when Augustus dies there was a peaceful switch in power. d. He becomes the second emperor in Rome e. It is believed that Livia is responsible for the deaths of the previous successors so that Tiberius could take over.
