Surgical Technician Training If you would like to enter the health care field in a meaningful way, you can find surgical technician training in vocational schools, technical schools, trade schools, and community colleges. Training in surgical technology can lead to certificates, diplomas, and degrees. A prerequisite for enrollment into a surgical technician course would be a high school diploma, and it would be helpful if you have also had some courses in health, biology, chemistry, and mathematics. Students who are enrolled in surgical technician training are about to enter the medical field, and they are required to take comprehensive courses in anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, pharmacology, diagnostic procedures, microbiology, surgical instrumentation, and professional ethics. Students are provided with both classroom education and supervised clinical experience. Surgical technician studies will include sterile techniques, surgical procedures, prevention and control of infectious agents, and handling medical and pharmaceutical supplies and equipment. Some responsibilities of the surgical technician would include interviewing and preparing patients for surgery, assisting with anesthesia, and keeping written medical records. Prospective surgical technicians who are participating in surgical technician training must have good manual dexterity, as they must be able to handle surgical instruments and supplies appropriately and quickly. Graduates of surgical technician schools may choose to apply for professional certification, as employers often prefer such credentials. Assisting in surgery is an important function in the operating room, and workers in this health care field are well paid. Incomes for quality surgical technicians can begin around $35,000.
