Week of March 28, 2016    Allelic trichromacy  ­has two mws alleles for the same gene  ­alleles differ in their wavelength sensitivities (some are even similar to the lws duplicative  trichromacy)  ­mws i son x chromosome  ­males (xy) can only have one mws so are dichromats   m1​ m2​ ­m​y or m​y  ­females (xx) can have one or two alleles, if X​X​ or X​X​ or X​X​ 2​ m1​ m2   Food selection  ­research has linked trichromatic color vision with the ability to select ripe food  ­research suggests that trichromatic vision is more likely to be selected for when food is  distinguished from non­food by color   ­research suggests that dichromatic vision is more likely to be selected for when food is  distinguished from non food by shape    Why new world monkeys have allelic trichromacy?  ­may be ancestral   ­two species of lemurs are allelic trichromats to find  ­cryptic fruit may be easier for dichromats to find  ­probably important when there aren’t other fruits around  ­trichromatic females could show others where ripe fruits are  \ ­selection for trichromatic females would maintain both M alleles in the population  ­example of balancing selection  ­maintains stable frequencies of dichromats and trichromats in the population    Why are all old world monkeys and apes trichromatic?  ­with the duplication and nucleotide substitutions, males and females are both trichromatic  ­during the time when the mutation appeared there was an extinction of many palms (ad maybe  figs)  ­no selection for dichromacy  ­instead, where there were no fruit, probably ate young leaves which are often red  ­some species eat only leaves  ­selection for being able to distinguish ripe fruit  ­would probably lead to coevolution
