Radical By David Platt Radical by David Platt begins with exposing what American Christianity has become and how the church has distorted the truth in who God really is. Platt then dives into the gospel like I have never heard it before. I grew up in the church, so I have heard the gospel presented hundreds, if not thousands of times. However, I have never heard it presented so clearly, boldly, and honestly as Platt did in chapter two; in fact, I don’t believe I have ever heard it like Platt wrote it. I don’t typically cry when reading books, but this book struck me at my core and several pages filled my eyes with tears. After reading this book, I agree with Platt in that, “Suddenly contemporary Christianity sales pitches don’t seem adequate anymore.” Platt calls people to live passionate lives for Jesus and to give up the typical “American dream” that everyone pursues. Radical will force you to look at your life and ask yourself the hard questions that you’ve been avoiding like, is Jesus really worth losing your life over? Do you believe Jesus and take Him at His word? It will make you uncomfortable, but that is sometimes what we need. Platt shares several stories of Christians that were martyred for their faith and how their lives mattered and accomplished Jesus’ eternal purposes. A quote that Platt said in chapter 8 that has really stuck in my heart is, “To everyone wanting a safe, untroubled, comfortable life free from danger, stay away from Jesus. The danger in our lives will always increase in proportion to the depth of our relationship to Christ.” As a Christian, this book has been one of the most challenging that I have ever read and has stirred my heart in a way that is hard to put words to. If you don’t want to renew your heart and passion for Christ, don’t read this book, because that is exactly what it will do. Radical by David Platt
