Variables in Communication The goal of communication is shared meaning. •People (co-sender, co-receiver) •Messages •Channels •Context •Noise •Physical •Psychological Defining Communication What is Communication? How is it distinguished from behavior? •Defining Communication is not clear-cut—scholars debate the definition. •Behavior: Human activity that is observable. •Communication: We all agree that communication is behavior—but what kinds of human behavior are we willing to label as communication? •Human behavior can be characterized as: •Intentional or Not Intentional. •Received (incidentally or consciously) or Not Received Four possibilities of behavior: • Intentionally sent and received. •Sender-receiver model •Everyone agrees this IS communication. • Unintentionally sent and received. •Receiver model • Intentionally sent but not received. •Communication behavior model •Unintentionally sent and not received. •Not communication Everyone agrees that: •Intentionally sent behavior that IS received is communication, and •That unintentionally sent behavior that is NOT received is NOT communication. •The controversy is over whether possibilities #2 and #3 should be considered communication or just behavior. •Importance of understanding communication as a “receiver-oriented phenomenon.” •Everyone immediately forms impressions off of our “presence,” image, “beingness?” •Communication competence requires “self-management” and “self-monitoring”
