Emily Smith Mr Nic Helms Re ection Essay 1 30 January 2015 The passage that I listened to was the one where Miranda begs her father to stop the storm to save the people on the ship When I read the play dismissed this and missed her sense of urgency and how important she felt it was that these strangers live She displays her pain for their suffering by saying quot0 l have suffered with those that I saw suffer A brave vessel who had no doubt some noble creature in her quot I ll 57 She shows that she is taking on the pain of others and telling her father that if it is him causing the storm then he is causing her to suffer The fact that this is the rst scene with Miranda and Prospero makes this scene confusing the rst time that one reads it because they do not yet understand that Prospero has magical powers This causes one to ignore Miranda s rambling because they are trying to piece together the different aspects of the play at this time However this opening scene for Miranda shows a great deal about her caring nature what one might think is exaggerated is actually a genuine sympathy although she is also naive Voice has evolved a great deal and her speech to her father may be slightly confusing to the rst time reader but hearing it spoken will uncover her true feelings by her pleading tone The difference between reading Shakespeare and seeing it acted out or read aloud is similar to when you are reading a text message in current day and miss a joke or that it was sarcastic because the person was not there to say it in that tone Another scene that I did not understand until I heard it at the staged reading was the one where Sebastian and Antonio were making fun of Gonzolo I understood that they were annoyed with him but I did not understand the joking and the playfulness until I saw it performed It is possible too that it was just the director of the staged reading s idea to make them be funny for the bene t of some comic relief because they were actually plotting to murder him eventually but I think that it was another example of something that is hard to understand the full meaning of until it is read aloud with the proper tones
