The carbon atoms that are adjacent to the electron withdrawing groups are called atoms.

The hydrogens which are attached to these carbon atoms are called  - hydrogen atoms. These are more acidic and easily replaced by deuterium when treated with deuterium oxide.

The  hydrogens are indicated as follows.

These three hydrogen atoms are replaced by deuterium ions. The reaction is as follows.
