QUESTION:

Problem 4Q

Problem

Describe all the forces acting on a child riding a horse on a merry-go-round. Which of these forces provides the centripetal acceleration of the child?

ANSWER:

Step by step solution

Step 1:

If the object is in rest then we always have two forces acting on the object. The first one is the weight Q (Q=mg, where g is the gravitational acceleration and m the mass of the object).

The second one is the normal force N. This one has the same intensity but the opposite direction regarding to the weight, and shows the force the base is acting on the object.  This comes from the Newton's tird law- the reaction force is the same as the action force, but have the opposite direction and acting on different objects.
