Chapter 11, Problem 35

(choose chapter or problem)

A uniform cylindrical turntable of radius 1.90 m andmass 30.0 kg rotates counterclockwise in a horizontalplane with an initial angular speed of 4p rad/s. Thefixed turntable bearing is frictionless. A lump of clayof mass 2.25 kg and negligible size is dropped onto theturntable from a small distance above it and immediatelysticks to the turntable at a point 1.80 m to theeast of the axis. (a) Find the final angular speed of theclay and turntable. (b) Is the mechanical energy ofthe turntableclay system constant in this process?Explain and use numerical results to verify youranswer. (c) Is the momentum of the system constant inthis process? Explain your answer.
