Chapter 21, Problem 75

(choose chapter or problem)

A cylinder is closed at both ends and has insulatingwalls. It is divided into two compartments by an insulatingpiston that is perpendicular to the axis of thecylinder as shown in Figure P21.75a. Each compartmentcontains 1.00 mol of oxygen that behaves as anideal gas with g 5 1.40. Initially, the two compartmentshave equal volumes and their temperatures are 550 Kand 250 K. The piston is then allowed to move slowly parallel to the axis of the cylinder until it comes torest at an equilibrium position (Fig. P21.75b). Find thefinal temperatures in the two compartments.
