Problem 10Q

5. If the net force on 3 system is zero, is the net torque also zero? If the net torque on 3 system is zero, is the net force zero? Explain and give examples.

Step-by-Step Solution:

Step-by-step solution

Step 1 of 2</p>

Let’s consider a uniform rod that is fixed at its center. Two equal and opposite forces are acting on the rod at ends of the rod. Since, the forces arc equal in magnitude and opposite in direction, the net force acting on the rod is zero.

If two equal and opposite forces are acting on a rod as shown in the following sketch, then there exists a net counterclockwise torque about the center of the rod.

Therefore, even if the net force on a system is zero, the net torque may not be zero.
