Chapter 5, Problem 5.16

(choose chapter or problem)

A built-up beam has been constructed by nailing together seven planks as shown. The nails are equally spaced along the beam, and the beam supports a vertical load. As will be shown in Chapter 13, the shearing forces exerted on the nails at A and B are proportional to the first moments with respect to the centroidal x axis of the red-shaded areas shown, respectively, in parts a and b of the figure. Knowing that the force exerted on the nail at A is 120 N, determine the force exerted on the nail at B.
