QUESTION:
Which molecules are polar? For each that is polar, specify the direction of its dipolemoment.(a) CH2Cl2 (b) HCN (c) H2O2
ANSWER:Key concepts
Polar molecules
A polar molecule is formed when one end of the molecule has more positive charges and the opposite end of the molecule has negative charges, resulting in an electrical pole. When a molecule is said to have a polar bond, the center of negative charge is on one side and the center of positive charge is on the other. The molecule as a whole will be polar.
Non polar molecules
Non-polar molecules are those that do not have charges at the end because electrons are finely distributed and symmetrically cancel out each other.
Molecular dipole moment
The vector sum of individual bond dipoles.
If a molecule has a net dipole moment then the molecule is polar in nature.
Step 1 of 4
Given molecules
(a) (b) (c)
We need to find which molecules are polar and specify the direction of its dipole moment.
Polar molecules are those molecules which possess a region of positive and negative charge.
