QUESTION:

Using the symbols d2 and d1, indicate the direction of polarity, if any, in each covalentbond.(a) C!Cl (b) S!H (c) C!S (d) P!H

ANSWER:

Key concept

Electronegativity

Ability of an atom to attract the shared pair of electrons towards it. It is a measure of the force of an atom’s attraction for electrons.

Polarity

Polarity or the bond is a measure of difference in electronegativity between atoms that share it. There are few types of bonds: nonpolar covalent, polar covalent and ionic bonds.

Direction in polar covalent bonds

If a covalent bond is polar, we can determine its direction.

Direction in polar covalent bond goes from less electronegative atom ( more electropositive atom) to more electronegative atom (less electropositive atom).

In other words, direction goes from an atom that has a smaller value of electronegativity to an atom that has bigger value.

Also we mark our atoms with , if an atom is less electronegative, and with if an atom is more electronegative.

Step 1 of 5

In this task we are asked to mark the direction of polarity in each polar covalent bond.

(a)     (b)    (c)    (d)

Polarity or the bond is a measure of difference in electronegativity between atoms that share it. There are few types of bonds: nonpolar covalent, polar covalent and ionic bonds.

The atom with the greater electronegativity has the partial negative charge and the atom with the lesser electronegativity has the partial positive charge.
