QUESTION:

Complete these structural formulas by adding enough hydrogens to complete the tetra-valence of each carbon. Then write the molecular formula of each compound.

ANSWER:

Key concept

Structural formula

For every structure there the principle is the same.

Carbon has a valency of four which means

  • Carbon that already has one bond around him, needs three more hydrogen atoms.
  • Carbon that has two bonds around him, needs two hydrogen atoms.
  • Carbon atom that has three bonds will need only one hydrogen, and a carbon atom that has 4 bonds around him already won't need a hydrogen atom at all.
  • For condensed formulas, we will just write carbon, oxygen and nitrogen atoms in order from left to right, and write the number of hydrogen atoms next to them.

    Step 1 of 10

We need to complete the structural formulas given by adding enough hydrogen atoms.
