QUESTION:

Is cis, trans isomerism possible in alkanes?

ANSWER:

Key concepts

Stereo center

A stereocenter is an atom (most commonly a carbon atom) about which exchange of two groups produces a different stereoisomer.

Cis,trans isomers

Have the same molecular formula and the same connectivity of their atoms, but the arrangement of their atoms in space cannot be interconverted by rotation about single bonds.

Cis substituents are on the same side of the ring.

Trans substituents are on opposite sides of the ring.

Most cycloalkanes with substituents on two or more carbons show cis, trans isomerism.

Step 1 of 2

In this task, we are asked if cis,trans-isomerism is possible in alkanes.

Cis,trans isomers have the same molecular formula and the same connectivity of their atoms, but the arrangement of their atoms in space cannot be interconverted by rotation about single bonds.

Cis substituents are on the same side of the ring.

Trans substituents are on opposite sides of the ring.
