A hiker finds herself in a lbrest 2 km from a long straight road. She wants to walk to her cabin, which is l0 km away in the forest and also 2 km from the road (Fig. 3.MP3). She can walk at a rate of 8 km,4r along the road but only 3 knVh through the fbrest. So she decides ro walk nrsr to the road. then along the road, and finally through the forest to the cabin. What angle 0 (shown in the ngure) would minimize the total time required for the hiker to rach her cabin? How much time is saved in comparison with the straight route through the forest?
