QUESTION:

Arrange the following species in order of increasing oxidation number of the sulfur atom:

(a) \(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{~S}\),

(b) \(\mathrm{~S}_{8}\),

(c) \(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{SO}_{4}\),

(d) \(\mathrm{~S}^{2-}\),

(e) \(\mathrm{HS}\),

(f) \(\mathrm{SO}_{2}\),

(g) \(\mathrm{SO}_{3}\).

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 7

Here we have to arrange the following species in order of increasing oxidation number of the sulfur atom.

(a)

We have to calculate the oxidation state of S-atom.

Let us consider the oxidation state of S is x, it is known that oxidation state of H is +1

Hence the oxidation state of S in  can be calculated as,

2(1) + x = 0

 x = -2

Thus oxidation state of S is found to be -2.
