?A voltaic cell is constructed from an \(\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}(a q)-\mathrm{Ni}(s)\)

Chapter 20, Problem 20.10

(choose chapter or problem)

A voltaic cell is constructed from an \(\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}(a q)-\mathrm{Ni}(s)\) half-cell and an \(\operatorname{Ag}^{+}(a q)-\operatorname{Ag}(s)\) half-cell. The initial concentration of \(\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}(a q)\) in the \(\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}-\mathrm{Ni}\) half-cell is \(\left[\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}\right]=0.0100 \mathrm{M}\). The initial cell voltage is +1.12 V.

(a) By using data in Appendix E, calculate the standard emf of this voltaic cell.

(b) Will the concentration of \(\mathrm{Ni}^{2+}(a q)\) increase or decrease as the cell operates?

(c) What is the initial concentration of \(\operatorname{Ag}^{+}(a q)\) in the \(\mathrm{Ag}^{+}-\mathrm{Ag}\) half-cell?
