Consider a single-slit diffraction experiment in which the amplitude of the wave at point O in Fig. 36.5a is \(E_0\) For each of the following cases, draw a phasor diagram like that in Fig. 36.8c and determine graphically the amplitude of the wave at the point in question. (Hint: Use Eq. (36.6) to determine the value of \(\beta\) for each case.) Compute the intensity and compare to Eq. (36.5). (a) \(\sin \theta=\lambda / 2 a\); (b) \(\sin \theta=\lambda / a\); (c) \(\sin \theta=3 \lambda / 2 a\).
