SI jinx. Players in any sport who are having great sea-sons, turning in performances that are much better thananyone might have anticipated, often are pictured on thecover of Sports Illustrated. Frequently, their performancesthen falter somewhat, leading some athletes to believe in aSports Illustrated jinx. Similarly, it is common for phe-nomenal rookies to have less stellar second seasonstheso-called sophomore slump. While fans, athletes, andanalysts have proposed many theories about what leadsto such declines, a statistician might offer a simpler (statis-tical) explanation. Explain.
