Problem 3P

Write Lewis structures for the following molecular formulas.

(a) N 2

(b) HCN

(c) HONO

(d) CO 2

(e) CH 3 CHNH

(f) HCO 2 H

(g) C 2 H 3 Cl

(h) HNNH

(i) C 3 H 6(one double bond)

(j) C3H4 (two double bonds)

(k) C3H4 (one triple bond)

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

Here we have to draw the Lewis structure of the following molecules.

Step-1

(a) N 2

The atomic number of N is 7. The electronic configuration is, 7N 1s2 2s2 2p3

The total number of valence electrons in N2 is = 5(2) = 10

The Lewis structure is,

Step-2

(b) HCN

In HCN, the central atom is C, surrounded by one N and one H atom.

1H 1s1   6C 1s2 2s2 2p2  7N 1s2 2s2 2p3

The total number of valence electrons = 1 + 4 + 5= 10

The Lewis structure is,

Step-3

(c) HONO

1H 1s1   8O 1s2 2s2 2p4   7N 1s2 2s2 2p3

Total number of valence electrons = 1 + 6(2) + 5 = 18

The Lewis structure is,

Step-4

(d) CO 2

In CO2 , the central atom is C , surrounded by two O atoms.

 6C 1s2 2s2 2p2     8O 1s2 2s2 2p4

Total valence electrons in  CO2 = 4 + 6 (2)= 12

The Lewis structure of CO2 is,

Step-5

(e) CH3CHNH

6C 1s2 2s2 2p2         1H 1s1   7N 1s2 2s2 2p3

Total number of valence electrons in CH3CHNH molecule is =2(4)+1(5)+1(5)=18e

The Lewis structure for CH3CHNH is

Step-6

(f) HCO2 H

The electronic configuration of H, C and O are,

  1H 1s1       6C 1s2 2s2 2p2              8O 1s2 2s2 2p4

The total number of valence electrons = 1(2) + 4 + 6(2) = 18

The Lewis structure for HCO2 H is

Step-7
