Problem 2P

Draw Lewis structures for the following compounds.

(a) ammonia, NH3

(b) water, H2O

(c) hydroniumion, H3O+

(d) propane, C3H8

(e) dimethylamine,CH3NHCH3

(f) diethyl ether, CH3CH2OCH2CH3

(g) 1-chloropropane, CH3CH2CH2Cl

(h) propan-2-ol,CH3CH(OH)CH3

(i) borane, BH3

(j) boron trifluoride, BF3

Explain what is unusual about the bonding in the compounds in parts (i) and (j).

Step-by-Step Solution:
Step 1 of 3

We have to draw the Lewis structure of the following molecules.

Step-1

Lewis structure of  ammonia (NH3)

In NH3 , the central atom is N, surrounded by three H atoms.

7N 1s2 2s2 2p3       1H 1s1

Total number valence electrons in NH3 = 5 + 1(3) = 8

Step-2

(b) Lewis structure of H2O

In H2O , the central atom is O, surrounded by two H atoms.

8O 1s2 2s2 2p4     1H 1s1

The total number of valence electrons = 6 + 1(2)= 8

The Lewis structure is,

 ,

Step-3

(c) Hydronium ion ( H3O+)

In H3O+ , the central atom is O, surrounded by two H atoms.

8O 1s2 2s2 2p4     1H 1s1

The total number of valence electrons = 6 + 1(3) -1= 8

Thus the Lewis structure,

Step-4

(d) propane, C3H8

6C 1s2 2s2 2p2      1H 1s1

Total number of valence electrons = 4(3) + 1(8) = 20

The Lewis structure is,

Step-5

(e) Dimethylamine (CH3NHCH3)

6C 1s2 2s2 2p2      1H 1s1  7N 1s2 2s2 2p3

Total number of valence electrons = 4(2 ) + 1(7) + 5 = 19

Lewis structure is,

Step-6

(f)...
