Here, we are going to propose the mechanism for the  synthesize the following secondary alcohols by adding an appropriate Grignard reagent to aldehyde.

The organomagnesium halides, of empirical formula R-Mg-X are called Grignard reagents by the name of  French chemist Victor Grignard. Grignard reagents can be obtained from the reaction of an alkyl halide with magnesium metal in presence of  dry (anhydrous) ether solvent, which is needed to solvate and stabilize the Grignard reagent as it forms.

R-X + Mg → R-Mg-X

Grignard reagent has been used for the synthesis of alcohol.

Step 1: Grignard reagent reagent attacks the carbonyl carbon of the aldehyde to form alkoxide
