Periodic table is classified into four Blocks.

(i) s- block elements: it has 2 columns in the periodic table. This is because s orbital has maximum capacity of holding 2 electrons.

(ii) p-block elements :  it has 6 columns in the periodic table. This is because each set of p orbital has maximum capacity of holding 2 electrons. Total six electrons can hold by p orbitals.

(iii) d-block elements:it has 10 columns in the periodic table. This is because each set of d orbital has maximum capacity of holding 2 electrons. Total10 electrons can hold by d orbitals.

(iv) f-block elements: it has 14 columns in the periodic table. This is because each set of f orbital has maximum capacity of holding 2 electrons. Total 14 electrons can hold by f orbitals.

The placement of an element in the periodic table is characterized by its electronic configuration which is due to the position of that element.
