QUESTION:

Determine the charge of each ion.

(a) oxygen ion with 10 electrons

(b) aluminum ion with 10 electrons

(c) titanium ion with 18 electrons

(d) iodine ion with 54 electrons

ANSWER:

Solution 75P

Step 1:

Here, we have to determine the charge of each ion :

First, let’s see what is an ion :

An ion is a charged atom or molecule.  It is charged because the number of electrons do not equal the number of protons in the atom or molecule.

If the atom has more electrons than protons, it is a negatively charged ion, called as anion. If it has less number of electrons than protons,it becomes  positively charged ion, it is called as cation.

Atomic number of an element gives the number of protons and also number of electrons. Using this we determine the charge of ions given.
