Here, we are going to discuss the basic form for the names of molecular compounds.

Step 1:

There are certain basic rules which must be followed while writing the names of molecular compounds. They are:

  1. While naming a molecular compound, the more electropositive(forms positive ions in chemical reactions) element is written first and the more electronegative(forms negative ions in chemical reactions) element is written in last.
  2. The more electronegative element is written or ended with an -ide suffix.
  3. Both the elements are preceded by a prefix(e.g., di, tri, tetra, etc.) to indicate the number of atoms of the element in the molecular compound.
