Problem 8Q

What limits the number of significant digits in a calculation involving only addition and subtraction?

Solution: Here, we are going to find the limiting factor of the number of significant digits in a calculation involving only addition and subtraction.

Step1:

When addition or subtraction is carried out in the numbers having different precisions, the final result should be reported up to the same number of decimal places as are present in the term having the least number of decimal places.

Step2:

For example, in the addition of numbers 2.41, 1.4 and 0.415, the number having the least decimal place is 1.4. Therefore, the final result after adding should also have digits only upto one decimal place.

2.41

1.4

0.415

4.225

Since, the answer should be reported upto one decimal place, therefore, correct answer will be 4.2.
