Problem 6Q

What are the properties of a liquid?

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 6Q

Step 1:

Liquids take on the shape of their container. The liquid state of matter is an intermediate phase between solid and gas. Like the particles of a solid, particles in a liquid are subject to intermolecular attraction; however, liquid particles have more space between them, so they are not fixed in position.

Step 2:

Special properties of liquid :

These molecules will have minimal cohesion. In contrast, water molecules use hydrogen bonding (very strong), so they display strong cohesion.

A cohesive liquid will form more spherical droplets and have much higher surface tension.

Adhesion is the attraction of a liquid molecule to its surroundings.
