QUESTION:

Classify each substance as a pure substance or a mixture. If it is a pure substance, classify it as an element or a compound. If it is a mixture, classify it as homogeneous or heterogeneous.

(a) helium gas

(b) clean air

(c) rocky road ice cream

(d) concrete

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Pure substance is  defined as when a substance is made up of only one type of element or one type of molecule and the composition of the substance remain same.

Similarly,

Homogeneous is a mixture where components are equally or uniformly distributed and the composition remains the same throughout the mixture. In an homogeneous mixture, only one phase of matter is observed. The mixture can not be separated.

On the other hand, Heterogeneous is a mixture where components are not uniform. The mixtures have different phases of states. They are not identical to each other.
