Problem 45P

Problem 45P

An automobile gasoline tank holds 42 kg of gasoline. When the gasoline burns, 168 kg of oxygen are consumed and carbon dioxide and water are produced. What total combined mass of carbon dioxide and water is produced?

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 45P :

Step 1:

Given : mass of gasoline = 42 kg.

Mass of oxygen consumed = 168 kg.

Total combined mass of carbon dioxide and water produced = ?

So, the reaction happening here is :

42 kg of gasoline + 168 kg of oxygen → Carbon dioxide + water

                            Reactants                                       Products

According to law of conservation of mass, ‘In any chemical reaction, the total mass of the reactants must be equal to the total mass of the products’. The total mass of reactants here is 210 kg. Hence, the total mass of products i.e total combined mass of carbon dioxide and water produced  will be 210Kg.
