(a) Solid copper reacts with solid sulfur to form solid copper(I) sulfide.

(b) Sulfur dioxide gas reacts with oxygen gas to form sulfur trioxide gas.

(c) Aqueous hydrochloric acid reacts with solid manganese(IV) oxide to form aqueous manganese(II) chloride, liquid water, and chlorine gas.

(d) Liquid benzene (C6H6) reacts with gaseous oxygen to form carbon dioxide and liquid water.

Solution 36P

Step 1:

(a)Solid copper reacts with solid sulfur to form solid copper(I) sulfide.

The balanced chemical equation is .

Cu (s) + S (s) CuS (s)

Step 2:

b) Sulfur dioxide gas reacts with oxygen gas to form sulfur trioxide gas.

SO2 (s) + O2 (g) SO3 

The number of O atoms in reactant is 4 where as in product it is three. The total number of O atoms in reactant and product is balanced by multiplying 2 with SO2, O2 and SO3

Thus the balanced chemical equation is,

2SO2 + O2 ----> 2SO3
