Problem 54P

PROBLEM 54P

Is each chemical equation correctly balanced? If not, correct it.

(a) SiO2(s) + 4HF(aq) → SiF4(g) + 2H2O(l)

(b) 2 Cr(s) + 3 O2(g) → Cr2O3(s)

(c) Al2S3(s) + H2O(l) → 2 Al(OH)3(s) + 3 H2S(g)

(d) Fe2O3(s) + CO(g) → 2 Fe(s) + CO2(g)

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 54P

Step 1:

(a)SiO2(s) + 4HF(aq) → SiF4(g) + 2H2O(l)

The above equation is well balanced.

Step 2:

(b)2 Cr(s) + 3O2(g) → Cr2O3(s)

The above equation is not balanced.

In order to balanced the total number of O-atoms in both the sides, multiply 2 with Cr2O3.

2 Cr(s) + 3O2(g) → 2Cr2O3(s)

Now the number of Cr atoms in both the sides can be balanced by multiplying 2 with 2Cr.

Hence the balance chemical equation will be,

4Cr(s) + 3O2(g) → 2Cr2O3(s)
