Problem 66P

PROBLEM 66P

Determine the molecular geometry of each molecule.

(a) SiO2

(b) BF3

(c) CFCl3 (carbon is central)

(d) H2CS (carbon is central)

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 66P

Step 1:

(a) SiO2

In  SiO2 the central atom is Si, surrounded by two O atoms.

14Si  Ne 3s2 3p2     8O 1s2 2s2 2p4

Total number of valence electrons = 4 + 6(2)=16

Lewis structure  of SiO2=

Steric number (SN) = (number of atoms bonded to central atom) +(number of lone pair on central atom)

SN = 2 + 0= 2

SN is 2 i.e linear structure with bond angle 180o.

Step 2:

(b) BF3

In BF3, the central atom is B, surrounded by three F atoms.

5B 1s2 2s2 2p1   9F 1s2 2s2 2p5

Total number of valence electrons = 3 + 7(3) = 24

The Lewis structure of  BF3

Steric number (SN) = (number of atoms bonded to central atom) +(number of lone pair on central atom)

SN = 3+ 0= 3

SN is 3 i.e trigonal planar structure with bond angle 120o.
