QUESTION:

Determine the molecular geometry of each molecule.

(a) \(\mathrm{SiO}_{2}\)

(b) \(B F_{3}\)

(c) \(\mathrm{CFCl}_{3}\) (carbon is central)

(d) \(\mathrm{H}_{2} \mathrm{CS}\) (carbon is central)

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 4

(a) \(\mathrm{SiO}_{2}\)

In  \(\mathrm{SiO}_{2}\) the central atom is \(Si\), surrounded by two \(O\) atoms.

\(_{14}\mathrm{Si}\mathrm{\ Ne}\ 3\mathrm{s}^2\ 3\mathrm{p}^2\)    \(_8\mathrm{O}\ 1\mathrm{s}^2\ 2\mathrm{s}^2\ 2\mathrm{p}^4\)

Total number of valence electrons = 4 + 6(2) = 16

Lewis structure of \(\mathrm{SiO}_{2}\) =

Steric number (SN) = (number of atoms bonded to central atom) +(number of lone pair on central atom)

SN = 2 + 0 = 2

SN is 2 i.e linear structure with bond angle \(180^{\circ}\).
