QUESTION:

Determine the bond angles for each molecule in Problem 65.

ANSWER:

Solution 67P

In order to predict the molecular geometry, we have to draw the Lewis structure of the given molecule and then molecular geometry can be predicted by VSEPR theory (steric number)

Steric number(SN) = (number of atoms bonded to central atom) +(number of lone pair on central atom)

Step 1:

(a) CBr4

6C 1s2 2s2 2p2     35Br [Ar] 3d104s24p5

Total number of valence electrons in CBr4 = 4 +7(4)=32

Thus the Lewis structure is,

Now we will calculate the steric number (SN) =

              (number of atoms bonded to central atom) +(number of lone pair on central atom)

SN = 4 +0=4

SN is 4 i.e the molecule has tetrahedral shape with bond angle 109.5o, sp3 hybridization.
