Problem 106P

PROBLEM 106P

Each of the compounds listed contains both ionic and covalent bonds. Write an ionic Lewis structure for each one, including the covalent structure for the polyatomic ion. Write resonance structures if necessary.

(a) RbIO2

(b) Ca(OH)2

(c) NH4Cl

(d) Sr(CN)2

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 106P

Here, we are going to explain the Lewis structure for each compound containing ionic and covalent bond.

(a) RbIO2

RbIO2 contains both the ionic (Rb-O) and covalent (O-I) bond. Rb-O is ionic due to the difference in large electronegativity between Rb and O whereas IO2-is polyatomic anion having I-O covalent bond by sharing of electrons between them.

The Lewis structure for  RbIO2 is given below,

Valence electron of I = 7

Valence electron for O = 6

Valence electron for Rb =1

Total valence electrons = 1+ 7+ 6x2 = 20 e

RbIO2------> Rb+ +IO2-

The Resonance structure of IO2- ion is as follows

The Lewis structure for  RbIO2 is given below,

(b) Ca(OH)2

Ca(OH)2 contains both the ionic (Ca-O) and covalent (O-H) bond. Ca-O is ionic due to the difference in large electronegativity between Ca and O. An O-H bond can ionize in some cases. There is already a negative charge on oxygen in OH. So it is more difficult to put a second negative charge on the oxygen by ionizing the O-H bond as well.

The Lewis structure...
