PROBLEM 56P

The total pressure in a 11.7-L automobile tire is 44 psi at 11 °C. How much does the pressure in the tire rise if its temperature increases to 37 °C and the volume remains at 11.7 L?

Solution 56P

Given that

Pressure (P1)=11.7 L.

Temperature (T1)=11 oC.

Temperature (T2)= 37oC.

Volume (V2)= 11.7 L

Pressure (P2)=?

We know that

PV=nRT

Pressure*Volume=number moles*R constant*Temperature

P1V1/T1=P2V2/T2

Volume stays constant so we cancel it. Convert temp to K, 11C=284K, 37C=310K

P1/T1=P2/T2

44 psi / 284K = P2 / 310K .

P2 = 48 psi.
