QUESTION:

What is hydrogen bonding? How can you tell whether a compound has hydrogen bonding?

ANSWER:

Solution 25Q

Step 1:

Hydrogen bond

A hydrogen bond is the electrostatic attraction between two polar groups that occurs when a hydrogen (H) atom covalently bound to a highly electronegative atom such as nitrogen (N), oxygen (O), or fluorine (F) experiences the electrostatic field of another highly electronegative atom nearby. This is not a sharing of electrons, as in a covalent bond. Instead, this is an attraction between the positive and negative poles of charged atoms.
