Questions & Answers

QUESTION:

Identify each of the following as a strong acid, weak acid, strong base, or weak base. For each, write an equation that describes its reaction with water.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 6

*     Strong acids are those acids that dissociate or break down completely in their ions. Strong acid examples are HCl, HBr

*     Weak Acids are the acids that do not completely dissociate into their constituent ions when dissolved in solutions. When dissolved in water, an equilibrium is established between the concentration of the weak acid and its constituent ions.

*     Strong base: A base which completely ionizes in water and produces a large amount of hydroxide ions.

*     Weak base: A base which is partially ionized in water and produces a small amount of hydroxide ions. Strong bases:NaOH,KOH.
