QUESTION:

A person preparing a fish tank uses preboiled (and then cooled) water to fill it. When the fish is put into the tank, it dies. Explain.

ANSWER:

Step 1 of 2

Using pre boiled water that has been cooled down to fill a fish tank can create specific challenges that might lead to the death of the fish:

  1. Lack of Oxygen: Boiling water removes most of the dissolved gasses, including oxygen. Fish require dissolved oxygen in the water to breathe. If the boiled water wasn't adequately aerated or oxygenated before introducing the fish, it might have been devoid of the necessary oxygen for the fish to survive.

  2. pH Level Alteration: Boiling can sometimes change the pH of the water by reducing the amount of dissolved carbon dioxide. This change might make the water either too acidic or too alkaline for the fish, depending on the original water source and its properties.

  3. Temperature Differences: Even if the water was cooled after boiling, there might have been a significant temperature difference between the tank water and the water the fish was initially in. Introducing the fish into water with a substantially different temperature can cause temperature shock, which is harmful.
