Here, we are going to use the half cell reactions to determine the overall reaction occurring in an alkaline battery.

Step1:

Alkaline batteries are the cells with a long life and an alkaline solution of potassium hydroxide.

The cell is cylindrical in shape contained in a drawn steel can(acts as cathode current collector). The negative terminal(anode) of the alkaline battery is made of zinc powder in a gel containing the potassium hydroxide electrolyte.

The positive terminal(cathode) is a compressed paste of manganese dioxide(MnO2) with carbon powder. The hollow centre in the cathode is lined with a separator to prevent the mixing of cathode and anode materials.
