Problem 62P

Draw and name all of the possible alkyne isomers of CH ≡ CCH2CH2CH2CH3. .

Step-by-Step Solution:

Solution 62P :

Step 1:

Alkynes are the hydrocarbons that contain at least one triple bond between the carbon atoms. They are also unsaturated hydrocarbons where each carbon atom is not connected to different atom because of presence of triple bond. The general molecular formula for alkenes is CnH2n-n.

Isomers are the compounds that have identical or same molecular formula as of another molecule but varies in the chemical structure, i.e different arrangement of atoms and molecules.

Step 2:

Given alkyne :

CH ≡ CCH2CH2CH2CH3

Here there are 6 carbon atoms, hence the prefix in the name will be ‘-hex’ and alkynes name end with ‘-yne’ and the triple bond starts at 1st carbon atom, so we place number 1 before the prefix ‘-yne’. Hence, the name of the given alkyne is Hex-1-yne or 1-Hexyne.

Step 3:

The isomers and name of the given alkyne - Hex-1-yne are:

First, let’s draw the unique backbone structures :

Drawing triple bond at 4th carbon atom and 5th carbon atom is identical to triple bonds in 1st and 2nd carbon atom. So let’s look at only triple bonds in 1st, 2nd and 3rd carbon atoms. Once we have got the unique backbone of carbon atoms, then we add Hydrogen atoms to make 4 bonds as the valency of carbon is 4.
